He Said Something Like That

Many times people repeat what they thought somebody said when what they thought was said was never said.  Take the accusation made against Jesus when He was before the Jewish council. False witnesses were brought in and they accused Jesus of saying He was able to destroy the temple and God would rebuild it in three days (Matthew 26:61). Jesus said "something like that" but that is not what He said. He said, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up" (John 2:19). Verse twenty-one tells us He spoke of the temple of His body, not the temple in Jerusalem. He did not say He would destroy anything. His enemies would.

So much strife is caused when people jump to conclusions about what somebody is supposed to have said when they are sore mistaken about it. It is wise not to be quick to "quote" somebody when you really do not know. You may be guilty of doing what the enemies of Jesus did.
