He Dwells in Us but How |
||
There are several
Scriptures that tell us that God dwells in us. But they only record that
fact and do not tell us HOW He dwells in us. J.W.McGarvey wrote, "The
fact that the Holy Spirit dwells in us is no proof that his action upon
our moral sentiments is direct or immediate." Some have wrongfully
concluded that the "indwelling of the Holy Spirit" someway
provides a direct leading and guiding of us. That is not so.
Perry Cotham correctly observes, "But it is through one's obedience to the Word and not that the literal being of God dwells in the body of the Christian. Also, the Bible teaches that Christ dwells in the Christian (Col. 1; 27; Gal. 2; 20). But how? It is 'by faith' (Eph. 3: 17), and faith comes by hearing 'the Word of God' (Rom. 10: 17). It is not literally, directly, or in some way 'conjunctively,' and separate and apart from the written Word. Christ dwells in Christians when His teachings control their lives. So, the Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian in the same way that God and Christ dwell in him, by faith, representatively." |
