Love For Enemies Demonstrated |
||
Love means seeking
the other's highest good. What do our enemies need most? None can doubt
it. They need salvation through Christ.
Some of the most vicious enemies of Paul were those of fleshly Israel. Yet, what did he seek for them? "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved?" (Rom. 10:1). That is the correct attitude of heart, isn't it? How did Paul demonstrate that love? He preached the gospel to all those who would listen. He debated, argued, pleaded, preached, persuaded so that even his enemies might know the joy, comfort, purpose and hope that belongs to those in Christ. Love for enemies is not an easy disposition to have. It is the result of our deliberate choice to seek their highest good as much as they will permit us. |
