The Same Problem Persists |
||
After the Jews were
allowed to return to Palestine and rebuild the temple, the work started
with enthusiasm. Then obstacles arose. Their adversaries created
difficulties right and left and there was a sixteen year work stoppage on
the temple. But the problem was not only with the opposition from outside.
Haggai, the prophet, was instructed by the Lord to deal with the problems
that existed among the Jews, their attitude and outlook.
One problem was that some did not consider it to be the right time to do the work. There are always those who want to hold up the Lord's work but have plenty of time and resources for themselves. This is pointed out in Haggai chapter one. They could build their own houses but not the Lord's temple. We would be naive to think this selfish and misguided attitude no longer abounds. It has obstructed much good work in the Kingdom.
