What Must be Done |
||
The people of Israel
knew that they had been given the promised land. They knew they had not
won that territory by themselves. They knew that their enemies had fallen
before the mighty hand of God rather than their own sword. They enjoyed
living in Canaan because God had promised it to the descendants of Abraham
and it would remain their home so long as they served the Lord faithfully.
How was it that the generations after Moses, and down through the years until the time of the Psalms, that the Israelites knew these things? Psalm 44 begins with a startling and most informative verse. "We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old." They knew because they had been taught. Who did the teaching? The same ones who must teach today; the fathers. Are not Christian parents taught to teach their young the admonitions of the Lord? Is this being done? And if not, is there reason to think the young will learn what they need most? What must be done is for each generation to make sure the following generation is taught the Word of the Lord. |
